Many computer users find that, after owning their computer for a few years, the file storage space (also known as your hard drive) is not big enough. With all of the media files we use these days – music, pictures, videos, etc – what might seem like a big hard drive at first can fill up rather quickly. Once you start running out of room on your hard drive, you will begin to encounter various technical problems when using your computer. Not only will a full hard drive mean that you are unable to save additional files, but you will experience other technical difficulties as well. Your system may become unresponsive due to the fact that there is not enough room on your hard drive for your RAM (random access memory) to function properly. This symptom can also manifest itself as not being able to view streaming video or other large media files. Of course, the error message you receive (if you receive an error message at all) may not make any reference to the fact that your hard drive is too full. Therefore, keeping an eye on the amount of available free space on your hard drive is a prudent thing to do.
So let’s say you have a full hard drive, but your computer is working just fine otherwise. Does that mean you need to scrap your whole computer just to upgrade to a system with larger file storage space? Of course not! One option would be to simply upgrade your hard drive to a hard drive with more space. This can be somewhat difficult because you would need to have a way to copy all of your old data from your original hard drive onto a temporary storage device, then you would need to install your new hard drive, and then you would need to copy your data from the temporary storage device onto your new hard drive. This is not an impossible task, but it does take some finesse and computer savvy. One thing to keep in mind about this solution is that once your hard drive is full… and no matter how big of an upgrade you make, you will eventually fill up that new hard drive one day… you will have to go through this same process all over again. Additionally, when your computer does become obsolete and in need of replacement in a few short years, you will have to transfer all of your data once again to you r new computer.
Another solution to your small hard drive problem is investing in some type of portable or removable storage. Your external storage options are seemingly endless, from tiny flash drives to very large capacity external hard drives. Using portable or removable storage media is a great option because you can hook it up to all future computers that you own and you will not have to worry about transferring data. In the rare case that something were to happen to your external file storage, there are many places online that can easily recover the data from your storage device. And the good thing about this is that your entire computer will not have to be out of commission in the process.
