How to Care For a New Mattress

We have all heard news segments and read health reports about how important sleep is for a person’s physical and mental well being. Americans spend millions of dollars each year on sleep aids and sleep related therapy just in attempt to get a good night of sleep. If you or someone you care about is not sleeping well, one of the first things you should look into is your mattress and box spring set. It is almost impossible to get a healthy night of sleep on a mattress set that is uncomfortable or in poor condition. Making an investment in a new mattress and box spring can be a very wise and healthy decision when it comes to your sleep.
Once your new mattress set arrives, do not think your responsibility ends with the mere selection and purchase of your new bed. If you want your mattress set to last for many years and to give you many nights of peaceful and healthy rest, you must maintain your mattress just as you would any other essential investment in your life such as your car or your home. Follow the mattress care tips below and you will have your well chosen mattress in good condition for years to come.
If your mattress is brand new, you should flip and rotate it every two weeks for the first three months of ownership. This helps the mattress filling and springs to settle evenly. After this initial time period, you should continue to flip your mattress twice a year. You should rotate it from side to side and end to end. Mattresses are obviously large and cumbersome, so do not attempt to flip any mattress larger than a twin sized mattress by yourself. If you chose a mattress with a specialized built in pillow top, it may be recommended that this type of mattress only be rotated, but not flipped. Check with your owners manual or the manufacturer if you are unsure.
Consider purchasing a mattress cover or mattress topper. A mattress cover or mattress topper may not only add protection to your mattress, but it could also add a layer of comfort. There are many fabulous mattress toppers on the market, including memory foam toppers and pillow toppers. These can add a layer of luxuriousness to an existing mattress for the fraction of the price of purchasing a new mattress. You may also purchase a cover that is made with a specialized barrier material that will aid in reducing the amount of dust and allergens in circulation if you or someone you love is an allergy sufferer.
Vacuum your mattress on a regular basis to remove dust and dust mites. Your vacuum cleaner should have an upholstery attachment that can be used to vacuum your mattress. It may be a good idea to open your bedroom windows when vacuuming your mattress so that any stirred up dust will not be trapped in your room. If your mattress becomes soiled in some way, use an upholstery cleaner to clean the soiled area and make sure you allow the mattress to dry fully before using it again.
