This is a process in which the substance sample is weighed, heated for an appropriate amount of time to promote drying, cooled in a dry environment, and then weighed again. The difference in the weight before the drying of the substance and after the drying of the substance gives the test conductor an approximation of moisture content. Conducting this entire process manually in a laboratory using a traditional oven can be very time consuming. Because of the time consuming nature of this process, moisture analysis machines have been developed and are readily available. Two highly accurate and reliable manufacturers of moisture analyzers are the companies, A&D and Ohaus. Some of the features available on moisture analyzers include test parameter memory, digital calibration, halogen heating, timers, and programmable profiles and drying modes to name a few.

Another popular method for analyzing the amount of moisture in a sample substance is the Karl Fischer titration method. This is a method that only measures the amount of water in a given substance (as opposed to other methods, such as the Loss on Drying method which measures any type of moisture in a given substance). This method was developed by a German scientist by the name of Karl Fischer in the year 1935. Even though this method only detects water, it still has many advantages. This method is highly accurate and precise, it requires a relatively small sample of the substance being tested, the preparation of the sample substance is relatively easy, the amount of time required for the moisture analysis is fairly short, the measuring range is practically unlimited and this method is suitable for analyzing solids, liquids and gases.

Explorers from many European countries visited Massachusetts before the start of permanent settlement. The Vikings may have visited around 1000. John Cabot is thought to have seen the coast in 1498. Samuel de Champlain mapped the coastline in 1605.

The first permanent European settlement in Massachusetts was at Plymouth, where pilgrims who crossed from England on the Mayflower started a community in 1620. About half of the settlers did not survive the first winter, but the local Indians provided them with knowledge that enabled them to survive the following winter more comfortably. Within a few years, Plymouth Colony had 2,500 settlers.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony encompassed a larger area and more communities. By 1640, there were around 10,000 settlers. Groups from Massachusetts started other settlements, including some in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. All of them gradually separated, with Maine being the last to go (1820).

Massachusetts was a center of agitation for independence. The Boston Tea Party provoked the British into declaring the Intolerable Acts, which served to unite other colonies behind the cause. Massachusetts was less supportive of the War of 1812, which impacted its overseas trade. However, the embargo had the beneficial effect of requiring more local manufacture. Two of the first six American presidents were from Massachusetts – John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams.

Massachusetts also fostered the growth of the anti-slavery movement. William Lloyd Garrison began to publish his anti-slavery newspaper The Liberator in Boston in 1831. The state was solidly for the Union during the Civil War, and ships built in Massachusetts contributed to the blockade of the Confederacy. Manufacturing was greatly stimulated by the demands of war.

Many inventions have originated in Massachusetts, including the sewing machine and the telephone. The first long-distance telephone line was strung between Boston Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island, in 1881.Also, Brandeis University is one of the newest private research universities in Massachusetts, as well as the only nonsectarian, Jewish-sponsored college or university in the country.

It probably should not be called the “wine glass,” but should be called the “wine group of glasses.” Each different type of wine has a different style of glass, designed to bring out the most in its specific drink. All wine glasses are stemmed. This allows the drinker to hold the glass without having the heat of his hand affect the temperature of the drink. A red wine glass is wide, allowing more of the wine to mix with oxygen, which brings out the flavor of the wine. A white wine glass has a narrower opening, since white wine needs less interaction with oxygen than red wine.

Champagne glasses are similar to white wine glasses. But, when inspected closely, the difference can be seen. Champagne is “sparkling wine,” meaning that it has carbonation. To keep the carbonation in the drink as long as possible, the glass is designed to expose as little of the beverage to the air as possible. The champagne glass has a taller bowl than wine glasses, and a much narrower opening. Very little of the champagne in the glass is open to the air, so the champagne stays bubbly longer than it would in another style of glass.

Another recognizable style of glass is the martini glass. These glasses are not built specifically for the martini, but are also used with other mixed cocktails. Like wine glasses, the martini glass has a stem to keep the drink from being warmed by your hand. The drink holding portion of the cup is shaped like an upside-down cone. The rim is very wide, which allows the drink maker to garnish the beverage with fruit or decorations, and still gives the drinker room to sip from the cup.

Of course, everybody knows what the shot glass is. In addition to being functional, they are often decorated and treated as collectibles. The shot glass is reserved for hard liquor, such as whiskey and tequila.
